Initial Research Hypothesis

The Department of Health has launched various campaigns to target the public on important health issues.

Your local Youth Club feel that they need to raise the profile of teenagers lifestyle choices and long term effects of poor choices, such as drug use. However, they are not sure where to start as there is so many myths associsted with this area and they want to make a sensible choice and impact on this area.

You are to conduct your own research on a specific health issue which affects young people. Write your initial hypothesis and the reasons why you feel that this is an area that is worth investigating.

Hypothesis – Younger teenagers age 13-16 use the internet more than older teenagers
    16-18.
I think this is worth researching because, overusing the internet can have serious effects on a teens lifestyle/health, especially if they’re younger teens as they may be less informed about the internet and overusing the internet – therefore I think this is a fairly suitable area to investigate.

This is a good idea because younger teens need to know what could happen when using the internet in a bad way and what the consequences may be so they know how to stay safe.

This is a good Hypothesis as young teenagers do use the internet more than older teenagers. When I was younger I spent more time on the computer using the internet than I do now, and I find that it did affect me, as I would rather be on the computer than out with my mates. Also I found that I got more enjoyment out of the internet when I was younger than I do now.

hypothesis:i agree with this comment, as i believe that young children need to be more aware of what is happening in their environment around them, due to this i think they will begin to feel more secure and safe due to them being more aware.

i dont think so. i mean im 17 and i use the internet id say more then i did when i was younger, as you grow up the internet opens doors for you, instead of wikipedia you are determined to find actual, factual responses and information,

    • jess h
      February 28, 2012 at 2:06 pm

I agree with this idea. To me the younger ones overusing the internet may get into a lot of trouble while using the internet more often.

      February 28, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I agree with Dawn, the younger the kids are the more they use the internet. When I was growing up i didnt know as much about the internet as my little sister know now.

    • Nijgera
      February 28, 2012 at 2:11 pm

i really agree with this because i have a younger brother that is 13 years old and he is constantly on the internet lurking around for things. I think that he shouldn’t be on the computer so much because not everything is true and also sitting around doing nothing on the computer i believe does effect a teens lifestyle because since they’re younger they don’t know much about what they are doing.

    • aaron
      February 28, 2012 at 2:36 pm

i think that this it true, because when i was younger i know that i used the internet a lot more and now i barley use it at all.

    Hypothesis:
With all this information in mind, I believe my hypothesis should be:

“Teenagers aged 13-18 are spending too long playing videogames and the ones that they play are too violent.”

I chose this because it is a common perception for adults, and there are often studies being made into this topic as many sources are uncertain on how problematic this is to teenagers. This is also a topic which is often highly publicised when isolated events of violence occur that can be related back to videogames.

      February 28, 2012 at 2:00 pm

I agree with your statement I for one spent a lot of time in my youth on gta 3 which was an 18, man that chainsaw level was great. While I don’t believe the game companies are to blame i believe the way the games are distributed is bad (such as myself) could get a hold of violent 18 games with relative ease.

    • Lewis Wright
      February 28, 2012 at 2:02 pm

This is a good hypothesis as it is a topic that has been discussed many times before with different results. There is also no recommended sort of time for children and adults to abide by when it comes to video games. Also focusing on violent games having the most effect is good as they get the most critcism.

      February 28, 2012 at 2:07 pm

This is a good hypothesis to use because it will be quite easy to do surveys and to collect results. this is because it is easy to define how long people are spending on videogames.

Hypothesis:- ’15-16 year olds spend more time on Facebook than 13-14 year olds per day’

I think that this is going to be worth researching because it will be interesting to work out how long they spend on it, this will help me to define how it effects their social life and education. if they spend too long on it then this could have positive and negative effects on their social life. I have decided to research this because Facebook is one of the biggest sites in the world and it helps me to work out how long most school children and teenagers spend on it.

    • Jamila
      February 28, 2012 at 2:19 pm

I think this a great idea to research because a lot of teenagers play video games that appear to be violent. And the way they win these games are by killing someone or something or they will lose. A lot of parents don’t take the time to realize what message the games are sending out there children/future and what the side effects could possibly lead to.

Hypothesis- young teenagers (13-15) know less about the effects of alcohol than older teenagers (16-18) and teenage girls consume more alcohol than teenage boys.

I feel this is worth investigating because alcohol can cause serious problems. In my research I found that it can result in violence and this can effect teenagers as some have been killed as a result of alcohol consumption. Also alcohol can effect your health as it can cause liver damage. Also I found in my research that girls consume more alcohol than boys, I found this interesting so I thought it would be a good point to investigate.

    • Dawn
      February 28, 2012 at 2:01 pm

I think your hypothesis is a good idea as I think many teenagers need to be taught the serious effects of alcohol as it effects many young people today. I also think it is worth investigating as younger teens will know less about alcohol than older ones, and will therefore be more oblivious to the effects.

    • Jessica
      February 28, 2012 at 2:04 pm

I think you have come up with good hypothesis. I agree that younger teenagers don’t know as much about alcohol and the serious effects it can bring maybe it’s because schools or their parents tend to tell them at a later stage.

    • Eric Williams

Hypothesis: Teenagers aged 13-18 years use the internet more frequently than adults aged 18-25 years.
This is worth investigation because the usage of internet within teens is increasing. Social networking sites such as Facebook has become apart of people’s every day life even if it’s to communicate to your friends on a night or to update your status throughout the day. Spending too much time on the internet can have serious effects with health and their lifestyle for example concentration in school decreases. So there is a lot to investigate for this hypothesis.

    • Dawn
      February 28, 2012 at 2:00 pm

I think your hypothesis is a good idea as young people need to know the effects of the internet, as it is not really taught around schools etc, so investigating this will be very useful.

    • Becca
      February 28, 2012 at 2:02 pm

I agree that this is a really good hypothesis to investigate Jess! Most people have facebook and we’ve seen the statistics on how frequently it is used so it would be a really good idea to investigate why this is happening.

Hypothesis – My hypothesis is that people aged 13-14 are more likely to spend more time on social network sites than those aged 15-16

I think this will be good to research because spending too much time on social networking sites isn’t good for your health, and can also be quite boring. I think that older people may spend less time on it because they will be revising for exams where as younger people have a lot more free time.

    • Shaun Dunn
      February 24, 2012 at 11:06 am

My hypothesis is that people aged 13-14 are more likely to spend more time on social network sites EVERY WEEK than those aged 15-16.

      February 28, 2012 at 2:15 pm

My Hypothesis – Younger teenagers, aged 13 – 15 have less/limited knowledge than older teenagers 16 – 19 on the implications of drugs and alcohol.
With there being 2 age groups and 2 aspects (durgs and alcohol) to research about it will give me a lot of information that i can use to answer my hypothesis. There are many issues relating teenagers on these subjects in the news every day, therefore giving me plenty resources.

My hypothesis is that more 17 – 18 year olds smoke marijuana than 15 – 16 year olds. And that they also smoke it more than once a week.
This seems like a good hypothesis to study as marijuana is a popular drug and is also frequently a drug that is included in surveying the public.

    • Kyle Walton
      February 28, 2012 at 2:03 pm

I think that this is a good hypothesis becasue it is often in the news, also it is people of our age so we know how they feel.

    • Lauren
      February 28, 2012 at 2:03 pm

I think this is a good topic as you have more than one aspect to look at which will allow you to search a wide vartiety of information. Also the fact that its aimed at a specific type of drug will be easier.

    • Aleeya B.
      February 28, 2012 at 2:14 pm

As if though this may be true, kids at the age of 15-16 are starting to get into marijuana. But actually the age for doing marijuana has started younger in the age. Actually it has started at the age of 14. When you start young you end up liking what you tried. When kids start doing stuff that they havnt done before it changes everything in there life. It changes there lifestyles, emotions, living ways all of that. But when someone starts something its all because they saw someone do it. Now and days teenagers has followed who they look up to. When they look up to someone as there role model they wanna do everything that they are doing. They want to be themselves but they feel as though that if they have there role model they need to do excatly what they want. Marijuana is such a addicting drug that once you try it. You will be on it forever and ever. You cant get off only if you decide to do rehab. But the only reason why i know this is because i attend a school where we have majors and my major is Law and Publc Safety. So we talk about stuff like this. But your hypothesis was right but the age for it stars really earlier.

    • jess h
      February 28, 2012 at 2:14 pm

Well, not to make it seem like it is a good idea that people are smoking but it is good that 15 to 16 years are not smoking, but at the same time, it is bad that they even have marijuana etc smokers. In my opinion, everyone should STOP smoking, but it is a good idea to study on this hypothesis.^^

Hypothesis: children and teenagers from ages 8-17 regardless of their sex wish for fame more in todays modern society more than they wish for intelligence or for strength than previous generations did.

I believe that more research needs to be conducted by looking at our modern culture and media products and how they are effecting modern generations and to see if this new belief that fame is attainable brought about by things such as reality TV and x factor may be counter productive to our youth.

    • Dean Milbanke
      February 28, 2012 at 1:59 pm

This seems to be a relevant hypothesis, especially for the young people today who only seem to seek fame. I also find your points about media products such as reality television to be accurate, and interesting.

    • Will
      February 28, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Well I only seek fame so I can give my family and friends a better life. But if I could be famous with intelligence then that would be great

    • Jamila
      February 28, 2012 at 2:27 pm

I think this is a great idea because i think i would wish for fame rather then intelligence. I know it’s wrong but i wonder why I do. Is it because the media? i don’t know but it would be very interesting to find out.

Hypothesis – More Male teenagers aged 16-18 have tried drugs than female teenagers aged 16-18

This seems like a good hypothesis because teenagers aged 16-18 often go to festivals and will be subject to their friends trying drugs.

    • Ryan
      February 28, 2012 at 2:04 pm

I think that this is a good one because I think that it is true because boys would get more peer pressure of their friends than what girls would get of their friends.

Hypothesis: teenagers aged 13-15 are more likely to be disrespectfull when drinking alcohol than 16-18 year olds.

My hypothesis is that Most teenagers age 17-19 are rebellious and are to much trouble compared to teenagers aged 13-16.

I think that this is worth looking into because this is not true, people think that most teenagers are rebellious because of the teenagers that do stupid things. They now get the image that we are all rebellious because some of the teenagers do act rebellious doesnt mean that we all are.

Hypothesis: Teenagers aged 13 to 15 are less aware about the Dangers of alcohol than teenagers aged 16-18

I think this is good to research because as the press always have an article about teenagers binge drinking and I think it is due to the lack of knowledge in teenagers. To help me with my Hypothesis I am aged 17 and I have a brother aged 14 so I can compare my knowledge about the damages of alcohol to his.

    • Katie
      February 27, 2012 at 2:25 pm

I think this is a good hypothesis as younger teenagers need to be more aware of the dangers that alcohol can bring. The idea of asking your brother is also a good idea as it can prove what people of that age are thinking – although it doesn’t come from more than one source.

      • Kurt
        February 28, 2012 at 2:00 pm

I can create a survey for the whole school to do and then look at the results and see which age group knew more about the dangers of alcohol.

    February 27, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Hypothesis: Teenagers aged 12-15 play video games for longer than those ages 16-18.

I think this will be good to research because of the differences in maturity and knowlege in younger generations who would often tend to procrastinate (play video games) rather than completing more important tasks like homework.

    • Kyle W.
      February 28, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Hypothesis: Teenages aged 13-15 are much less likely to drink alcohol than teens aged 16-18.

this is a good Hypothesis because it will be simple to find out research and facts for this. It would also be easy to survery it because you can ask people whether or not they have been pressured into it or not.

    • Becca
      February 28, 2012 at 2:05 pm

I think this is a really good hypothesis as it would be interesting to find out how teenagers begin drinking excessively. If this is proved then people can find ways to resolve the problem of binge drinkers as they know how the problem begun.
